Interview nightmares

Have you a story of a job interview that went wrong? For instance: The Accountant that sat in front of the interview panel with his flies undone with his white pants showing through.
or the interviewer who got the application notes muddled up and interviewed the “wrong candidates” all day.

If something similar has happened to you then we would love to know

…once who was wearing one black and one brown shoe!

I desperately wanted to tell him, if for no other reason than perhaps to save him from any further embarassment later in the day. However, as he seemed very nervous I didn’t. It’s a shame he didn’t get the job, I had a nickname all worked out for him!

Inappropriate though this may be, I am reminded of a recruiter who I used to work for many years ago. Clearly of the “here’s how it’s done m’boy” school of coaching he decided to take me with him to a meeting to demonstrate how to win business. This resulted in two memories which remain fresh and hilarious to this day:

    1. Talking to a (prospective) client, describing how the details we took during a briefing marked us out as better than the competition…. “the thing that really makes us stand out, more than anything else probably, is the tightness of our briefs”. (I kid you not).

    2. To the same client, in the same meeting (how they ever kept a straight face I will never know) again on what made us such fabulous recruiters… “we will never, ever sacrifice speed for the sake of quality”

Some 15 years ago I had an interview with the CEO of a software company. They were in desperate need of a good software engineer. I thought the interview went well – after all I’d worked on big projects and had a proven record of successfully deploying commercial software.

Then he informed me that programming was something even his 14 year old son could do.

I told him to employ his son, stood up and left.
